What we picked

When I began working on this guide, in January 2020, I did the usual Wirecutter thing: I started with basic research. These things are how they work. These things are created by whom? Who uses them? What do they cost? How important are the features? The first three questions were simple to answer. But the final two were difficult. There are metal detectors that cost under $100 and metal detectors that cost $2,000 or more. There are a wide range of features that come with increasing prices. For the most value, we wanted a machine that would be useful to a beginner, and not have any extras. We meant to search for a machine with some of these features, but at a lower price than its comparable equipped counterparts.

A few promising prospects were identified by me after I made calls to both manufacturers and retail stores. But even though I found the people I spoke with candid, I wanted unvarnished advice. The Atlantic Treasure Club, Long Island’s oldest and most respected metal-detecting club, was the first to contact me. I soon booked train tickets for the next meeting.

Club members were able to help me get rid of one particular detector manufacturer. I was also able to narrow down my choices from another manufacturer. Independently, several people suggested that I consider purchasing a new model from a third manufacturer. I was previously hesitant to purchase a brand-new model because of its low reviews. A machine affordable enough for beginners to use and easy to learn from, as well as the ability to change settings and the materials used, were key factors. These features are difficult to quantify, so we won’t be able compare them with any other machines. Instead, we’ll provide more details on the performance of our choice.

According to Treasure Hunters Real-life, These Are The Top Metal Detectors

Photo: BBC Detectorists. Most of us have lost the desire to find hidden treasure. You don’t need to give up on your dreams. Anybody can locate lost pieces of jewelry or coins that have been long forgotten with the correct metal detector. Some locations may be better for metal detecting than other. Branko, a Croatian metal detectorist who posted about his discoveries, which included a large Roman coin featuring Alexander Severus, on his Instagram account Metal Detecting Croatia.

“Most American coins are only 100-years old, however, I’ve seen people with detectors find European coins as old as 2000 years.” he said.

However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t cool stuff you can find in the US. Brad Martin of Green Mountain Metal Detecting has a YouTube channel highlighting some of his best finds, including some Spanish gold in the mountains of Vermont. He says that it is crucial to choose the right tools. The choice of tools is important. Someone looking to find gold jewelry in saltwater beaches should have a different detector than someone who searches for old coins at parks. Barisic and Martin shared their experiences with metal detectors, including what equipment they used to find gold jewelry on a beach. Their suggestions included other gear needed to dig out your treasure, safely returning it to you.

Martin believes that the machine’s ability to distinguish trash from treasure is dependent on its price. While you shouldn’t spend thousands on your first metal detector, you don’t want to go too cheap either. Martin states that “spending $150 more from well-respected brands, such as Garrett XP Minelab Fisher, will save a lot more time and disappointment in field.” Barisic believes the most important thing is the place. Chambers and Martin both agree that great spots can be found with inexpensive metal detectors. But, if the soil is unaffected for an extended period, it’s easier to find treasures. Martin said that crop fields can be plowed or turned which makes some items difficult to locate. Many detectorists look at old maps to find the ruins of old homes or ask permission to look for treasure at old houses about to be demolished.

However, before you begin digging to find artifacts you should think about the site you are excavating and whether your actions might be causing harm to other sites that may have been preserved. Matthew Reeves from James Madison’s Montpelier says, “There is an acrimonious relationship between metal detectorists und archaeologists.” These tensions are caused by thefts and damage to historic sites both in Europe, and the U.S. But there are also relationships where the two are cooperating. Reeves is able to work with Montpelier’s metal detectorists in order to save and preserve the stories and lives of the two-and-a half million Americans who were enslaved and lived on the 2,650-acre plantation. Before ever putting shovel to the ground, they carefully survey the land looking for evidence (usually a concentration of nails) of labor sites. If not properly handled and recorded, these sites and the stories of the people who labored there would be lost both to their descendants and to the world.

“There are places that people can metal detect and kind of scratch that itch to find things,” says Reeves, noting that beaches are a good place to start. Chambers and Artur Kropiwiec both from the U.K., are of the opinion that you should always get the permission of the landowner (or the state) before digging. Public land laws are different from one country to the next. Before you head out treasure hunting in your nearest park, it is a smart idea to conduct some research. And no matter where you’re digging, it’s a good idea to document and photograph where you find things just in case.

, who has been passionate about metal detecting since he was 14 years old, makes it great for practicing on sandy beaches. For a fraction of the price, you can purchase the Garrett Ace 150.
