Studies Find Rat Poison in Dead Eagles Across the U.S.
More that 82 per cent of 133 birds tested for anticoagulant rodenticides
One new study has shown that rats poison is found in the bodies more than 80 per cent of 133 dead golden and bald-eagles. This comes despite the fact that their numbers are increasing since the banning of DDT. Three federal laws protect them. A new study has found that Americans are trying to eliminate rodents using poison may be negatively impacting eagles in America, Ian Morse reports for New Scientist. The study was published in the journal PLoS ONE. It tested 116 bald eagles as well 17 golden eagles for common rat poisons, known as anticoagulant pesticides. The researchers found that rat poison was present in 82% of the eagles tested.
Even though the fatality rate of four percent of the Eagle deaths was confirmed to have been due to rat poison, the presence of such deadly chemicals is still concerning.
“This suggests that even though the greatest efforts have been made to reduce the chance of raptor diseases being exposed to these compounds, somehow they are getting exposed,” Mark Ruder from the University of Georgia, who is a lead author of New Scientist’s paper. Ruder is a research scientist studying wildlife disease and is a leading author of this paper.
Rat poison is a poison that can be ingested by predators like bobcats, coyotes and eagles. Most rat poisons are now what’s known as second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides, meaning they kill animals that eat it by preventing the blood from clotting and causing lethal internal bleeding. A second-generation rodenticide anticoagulant tends to remain longer in the organism of all creatures that have not been effected.
While the Environmental Protection Agency restricts second-generation pesticides sales to professionals such as pest control technicians, the chemicals are still being sold to consumers.
Ruder told Gizmodo: “It’s not the ability of those tissues to persist for a long period that creates problems.” Ruder explains to Gizmodo that because they’re efficient predators and scavengers eagles have a greater chance of getting the poison through their systems. Ruder said his research shows that deadly rats poison still finds its way into the larger environment in spite of regulations. Rudy tells Gizmodo: “We need to keep looking at what pathways rat poison is finding its way into wildlife’s environment, and how we can reduce that risk.”
