Neighbors by Ring
The Neighbors App is a community-driven safety and crime prevention app. It uses your address to create a radius around your home. If anyone shares an alert on the App about crime or safety within that radius, you’ll get a notification on your phone and tablet. If you share an alert on the App about a crime or safety issue in your radius, your neighbors will get a notification on their phones and tablets. You can comment on these alerts to provide additional information about local issues, give tips to avoid affected areas, share photos or videos to help neighbors stay on the lookout, etc. You can narrow your radius to only focus on hyper-local issues. Or if you live in a more rural location, you can expand your radius to include nearby communities and landmarks.

Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2.

Ring’s $249.99 Video Doorbell Pro 2 video doorbell is the most advanced yet. This new doorbell comes from a company who has almost become a household brand for video doors. It offers a wide field of views and high quality video; many options to customize notifications and recording zones; fast performance. This includes sending an alert to your smart speaker or phone when someone rings the bell, or pulling up the live feed via the Ring app. The Video Doorbell Pro 2 will work for you if you’re willing to spend the money and can set up a wired entry system at your front door.

The new Video Doorbell Pro 2 is Ring’s top-of-the-line model, replacing the original Video Doorbell Pro from 2017. Unlike Ring’s other doorbells, the Pro 2 does not have a battery option; you have to have wiring running to it for power. The Pro 2 doesn’t need to be powered by a battery. It is smaller and more responsive than Ring’s other battery-powered models. This device can also be connected to an existing home doorbell chime.

Despite the fact that it is more costly than others Ring models, the Pro 2 does not really appear any better. The housing is made entirely of plastic, and there’s a big Ring logo stamped on the bottom. Google’s Nest Hello Logitech circle view doorbell is a better choice if you prefer a sleek design.

Ring has made a variety of improvements to this model, the main change being how the Video Doorbell Pro 2 records video clips. It captures video from 1536 x 1506 pixels square. The Pro 2 is different to the other Ring doorbells. This makes it much simpler to identify packages left on your doorstep by being able to see the ground from right in front.

With its wide, tall, and expansive field of view, I was able to see all of my tiny porch more clearly than my older 16/9 Ring doorbells. The Pro 2 captures a sharp and detailed image, complete with HDR for balancing bright skies and visitors’ faces. You can also turn it on infrared at night if you have low light. Because the porch light at my front door was adequate to allow me to use full-color video, the Pro 2 was in regular video mode. I didn’t have to turn on any lights at the doorbell to make it work.

Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 boasts a new camera, which can capture a large and square video clip.

Even though it is more expensive than the average Video Doorbell Pro 2, it’s still quite plasticky. It also looks cheaper when compared with other options.

Easy access to the Pro 2’s video feed is possible through my Ring app, which supports both 2.4GHz or 5GHz WiFi. This takes less than a minute. Likewise, asking an Echo Show to display the feed is quick and easy. Fire TV and Echo Show TV will display the feed automatically whenever the doorbell rings. Older video doorbells used to take an agonizing amount of time to show their video feeds. This new crop seems to be much more efficient than the older ones.

Pro 2 has a brand new 3D Motion Detection feature. This allows you to track the movements and locations of anyone on your property from far away. The name oversells what this is doing a bit: the app will show a top-down view of movements represented as colored dots on the map of your home overlaid over the recorded video clip. It’s designed to let you see where someone has been on your property before you can see them clearly on the camera. This feature has a limited range, only 30ft. That’s enough for me to see about a third down my driveway. While it is a nice demonstration of technology it doesn’t have much utility.

We agree to keep Ringing Video Doorbell Pro 2 in our hands

Smart devices require that you accept certain terms and condition before you can use them. This is a list no one ever reads. This makes it impossible to go through and understand every agreement. We’ll start to count how many times we have to click “agree to use” when we look at them, since most people won’t be able to read these agreements.

For Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 to be set-up and used, you need to have (or create) an account on the Ring App for Android or iOS. You must agree to Ring’s terms of privacy by creating an account. These terms must be agreed to before you can use any Ring products.

You must also create an account for the integration you wish to use with your Ring doorbell.

Final total: 2 mandatory agreements plus as many additional agreements as you need, depending on the other services linked to your Ring Account.

Ring makes it easy to control these features. You can control both of these features in the Control Center section. Here you can deactivate the Neighbors feed, and prevent public agencies from using your camera to request clips. This will turn off these features as well as limit your ability to share videos with others. You can also activate end-to end encryption. But I wish Ring would go even further and disable both of them by default, letting owners decide if they want to opt in or not during setup.

Ring’s range of video-doorbells has increased in size over recent years. Sometimes it is difficult to determine which one will best suit your requirements. This Pro 2 video doorbell camera is simple to use, and you can hook it up to your existing wiring. The Pro 2 doorbell is for you if you are looking for the highest performance, and are part of Amazon’s Echo ecosystem.

Photograph by Dan Seifert / Verge Correction, 31 March 2020: A previous version of this review claimed that 3D Motion Detection allowed for you to view movements beyond the frame of the camera. This is false. It only can detect motion inside the camera’s frame. We apologize for this error.
