Walmart appears to be the dominant retailer worldwide, surpassing Amazon.
It is extremely competitive on the global market for discount products, which makes it especially attractive in high-density areas.
You might wonder, given the number of stores that are located in places as far as China and India, if Walmart is in India. I’ve got the answer you’re looking for, and it’s not what you think.
Is Walmart In India Or Delhi In 2022?
Walmart doesn’t have stores in India nor Delhi, as of 2022. Walmart, however, is the majority shareholder in Flipkart Group (e-commerce platform founded by Indians) as well as its subsidiary Myntra (apparel), and PhonePe, a mobile payments company. Walmart is not planning to open physical shops in India.
Indian Walmart: What’s it called?
Flipkart was an Indian-founded, existing ecommerce company acquired by Walmart in 2018.
The company’s seemingly unlimitless resources allow them to be very selective in their entry into new markets.
Although it can be hard to recall, different cultures or different customers might not see American retail style as the friendly, fun experience that U.S. shoppers enjoy.
For example, when Walmart entered the UK, they did so through the acquisition of the established Asda chain of grocery stores, rather than with Walmart stores.
So it’s not surprising that they chose a different route than the process of opening a Supercenter in a country with a population density of about 1,100 people per square mile.
What is Flipkart and How Does It Work?
Two former employees of Amazon founded Flipkart in Bangalore in 2007.
It originally followed Amazon’s formula of online book sales, but soon expanded and acquired a number of other mobile retailers, like Myntra and PhonePe.
Walmart won the 2018 bidding war to acquire Flipkart’s controlling stake – 77% for $16billion, and Walmart had $2 billion in equity financing.
Walmart India or Delhi: Where can you shop?
Although there is no Walmart Supercenter, Discount Stores or Neighborhood Marts located in India’s capital Delhi or India itself, it is possible to still purchase their Indian products.
Flipkart can be accessed from anywhere at any time. It has an Amazon-meetss-Wish look.
There are many options available, starting with the homepage.
If you want a brick-and–mortar experience in India, Delhi and other parts of the world, then there are plenty of options. However, be aware that these choices come with some limitations.
For Indian Walmart stores, you will have to visit Best Price Flipkart Wholesale.
There are almost 30 stores in India. One store is located 51 miles away from Delhi.
These wholesale warehouses are not, however, for your everyday shopper.
They are instead for owners of neighborhood shops and MSMEs (micro-, small, and medium businesses).
These shops not only play an essential role in the Indian economy but are also part of Indian communities’ fabric.
They’re the lifeblood for many Indian families – providing everything they need in one place, in a reasonably convenient location.
To shop at a Best Price Flipkart Wholesale, then, you must be a small business/store owner (or a shopper on their behalf), and you must join the membership club.
If a Flipkart Wholesale sourcing their products from India then a customer is making an indirect Walmart purchase.
Is Walmart Coming To India?
This raises the question, “Why aren’t there any Walmarts in India?”
Indian laws prevent most foreign businesses from entering India. This is a major problem that threatens the existence of the mom-and–pop network.
Walmart uses, or navigates, depending on your interpretation, loopholes in the law to nonetheless profit from India’s exploding population and economy.
The second is that, although there has been evidence of a steady growing, upwardly mobile Indian middle class since 2008, data from the year 2020 shows a very different picture.
Worldwide, the Coronavirus pandemic caused 32 million Indians to leave the middle class. The number of Indians earning less that $2 per day rose by 75 millions.
India, despite having the third-largest economy in the world, also counts nearly one-third of its entire population as impoverished.
So it’s hard to see how Walmart, even in India, could be able run a supercenter.
Back in 2012 , when some economic regulations relaxed a bit, Walmart did apply to the Indian government for permission to open some branded stores.
But it didn’t work out. Walmart was wise in entering India in this manner in 2018, “infiltrating” so to speak and setting up shop through the existing retail network.

Walmart India doesn’t have any stores with company branding due to India’s restrictive laws.
However, Walmart circumvented those laws by purchasing a controlling stake in the Indian-founded company Flipkart, an e-commerce and wholesale warehouse company.
Walmart’s continued worldwide growth continues despite the challenges of occasional economic instability.
