It’s important that you maintain your outdoor space during summer. A garden hose, no matter how you plan to use it for gardening or other household chores such as washing your car outdoors with ease can prove useful.

Kristiana Lagen, Handy’s home care specialist said: “Choosing a new garden-hose should not be considered as an investment.” The right hose will last up to 10 years if you consider length, material, and water pressure. But it can be difficult finding the right one for your outdoor needs with all the options available. Laugen pointed out that they may also make a good investment. One good-quality hose, reel, and nozzle combined could cost as high as $100. To simplify your search, we consulted gardening experts to determine how to shop for a garden hose and rounded up some highly rated and expert-recommended options.

Types Of Garden Hoses

Garden hoses have evolved to offer a wide range of options, including lightweight, economical hoses for daily watering and high-pressure models for heavy watering. Buyers can even find expandable garden hoses that stretch to full length when the water is on but retract to a third of that size for storage. Typical watering tasks will determine the best type of hose to choose.

The hose can be used for smaller yards with a small number of plants and raised beds. They are usually light-weight (between 2 and 4 pounds), so they can be easily rolled up and stored on a garage hook.

Standard: Also labeled as “medium duty,” these garden hoses are made for general around-the-yard lawn watering needs. These hoses are heavier than lighter-duty hoses (4 to 10 pounds), and may be more suitable for storage on a reel than being hung on a hook, depending on their length.

Heavy-duty: Because they are stronger and more resistant to kinks and can withstand the elements, heavy-duty gardenhoses will be the best choice. They can cost up to twice what standard and light-duty hoses cost.

Expandable: This is the latest innovation in the market. These lightweight hoses weigh around 2 pounds and are made out of flexible materials. But, when filled with liquid, the hoses stretch to their full length, which is usually between 25 and 50 feet. You can attach them to wands or sprinklers to water raised beds and pots.

Soaker: This hose conserves more water than any other type. Instead of spraying water that will evaporate, soakerhoses deliver water directly to plants’ roots. Soaker hoses are a great choice for landscape beds and raised gardens, as well as along rows of vegetables.

Flat: A flat hose is tubular when it’s filled with water. When empty, the flat hose will return to its original shape, which makes it very easy to fold up and store. It’s suitable for basic watering and sprinkling use, and some flat hoses are designed to work as soakers.

Here are some things to consider when shopping for a quality garden hose

Start with length. Hoses usually come in 25-foot increments, most often topping out at 100 feet. The right hose length is the one that makes the most sense for your setting. A flexible tape measure can be used to help you determine the appropriate length. A 50-foot length is sufficient for suburban yard tasks, such as washing cars, watering plants and spraying down decks.

Though you could buy hoses longer than 50 or 100 feet, it will still be expensive and more difficult to obtain. For this reason, we recommend that you begin with a 50-foot length and add hoses as needed. If a piece of the hose becomes damaged or leaks, it can be replaced instead.

The normal hose diameter ranges from 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch. Water moves faster if the diameter is larger. A 3/4-inch hose delivers roughly three times as much water as a 1/2-inch hose in the same amount of time.

There are many options for garden hoses. Although rubber garden hoses have the best durability and versatility, they can be more expensive at $50+ per 50-foot. While rubber garden hoses can resist cracking and kinking but are lighter when filled with water, they also have a higher resistance to kinking. The hose reel may be useful for facilitating storage. TIP: Rubber hoses should be kept out of direct sun as they can suffer from UV-light damage. Stainless steel is another durable material that minimizes kinks and leaks but is not as flexible and needs to be handled with care around surfaces like car exteriors to prevent damage. Vinyl is a synthetic material that’s the cheapest for hoses. An inexpensive synthetic hose may be suitable for areas with limited water requirements, such as warm temperatures (no winters) or where there is little space. Plus, they’re typically lighter, making them a better fit for people with limited lifting mobility.

For durability, the fittings’ material is important as well. Hose fittings made of brass or metal are harder to crush than those made of plastic. A hexagonal-shaped fitting is also a nice feature to look for since it means you can use a wrench if you need to loosen a too-tight seal.

Experts do not recommend that you drink from your garden hose. We didn’t prioritise this claim. However, if you are concerned about whether or not the hose is delivering water to plants and herbs, we suggest that you look for one labeled as “drinking water safe.” As with most gardening tools, you only get what you pay. The hoses with a lower price tend to have thinner materials, which can cause them to kink. The kinks lead to cracks and holes, which lead to leaks. The bottom line is that cheap hoses are more likely to leak and eventually fail than their more costly counterparts. These factors were taken into consideration when we tested and researched our top-rated garden hoses.

Dramm ColorStorm Rubber Hose has all of the qualities you want in a hose. Made of durable EPDM rubber, this 5/8-inch hose is 50 feet long (also available in 25 feet and 75 feet) and features nickel-plated brass couplings and a hexagonal design. Kelly Smith Trimble is a master gardener, and the editorial director at She says Dramm hoses are durable and have less chance of kinking. This may be due to their hexagonal design. There are many color options to help brighten your garden. I also love that these hoses are made in the U.S.A.” The only downside to this hose is that it’s a bit pricey, and, thanks to its popularity, the stock has been hit or miss recently.

Best Runner-Up Garden Hose: Craftsman Rubber Garden Hose Amazon

Craftsman rubber garden hoses are another good choice. Hexagonal, crush-resistant nickel-plated brass fittings are featured on this Dramm-style hose. Also made in the U.S.A, Craftsman rubber hose is durable, kink- and scratch-resistant. This hose has been difficult to get in stock. You may be able order it online or pick it up at Ace Hardware depending on where you live. Flexi Hose Lightweight Garden Hose with Nozzle Amazon This flexible hose is compact, lightweight, and versatile. It is only three pounds in weight and made of an elastic fabric outer with four layers latex. This allows the hose to expand as water fills it. Although the adjustable nozzle is included, it can be purchased separately. Our tester noted that she felt the nozzle was not as powerful and strong as some other nozzles. This hose was lighter than the old one she used and occupies less space with the spigot. Plus, she thinks the fabric actually feels and looks more durable and long-lasting than an old rubber hose that’s prone to cracking and kinking up all over the yard.

Long Water Hose Solutions 01:09

Stop struggling with long water hoses with this simple solution.

You can use a soaker pump hose to water your vegetable gardens. Instead of lugging a rubber hose back and forth from storage to your garden, you can simply leave these hoses in gardens and landscaping beds and just turn on the spigot (or just it on a timer) to turn on when it needs water. Another perk of using soaker hoses for vegetable gardens is that they water at the root level and avoid getting water on the leaves, which can cause mildew and other plant problems. Rocky Mountain Goods offers a PVC liner with added strength fabric. This hose was very easy to use and soaks the ground surrounding her vegetables in a matter of minutes. Jackie McGilvray (’s editor) says that she likes the lightweight of it and its ease-of-use. “It laid flat from the box. It didn’t take much to get it into place. Flexzilla Lightweight garden Hose Walmart is the best budget friendly hose. This Flexzilla hose, which uses lightweight polymer materials, is extremely popular. It measures 50 feet in length, has aluminum fittings, and an outer cover with a lasting finish that is resistant to UV damage, abrasion, and mold. Although it was less heavy than the stainless steel or rubber hoses we tested, it proved to be just as resistant to kinks. However, we’re not sure it would last the same amount of time. It is still a fantastic option if it doesn’t require as much watering or you have an infrequently watered garden.

Best Stainless Steel Garden Hose: Bionic Steel Pro Heavy-Duty Stainless Steel Garden Hose Amazon

While our tester liked the more flexible Craftsman rubber hose better than this stainless steel one, she did like the Bionic Steel Pro the best for a stainless steel option. It’s very strong, kink resistant, and can even survive a car running into the couplings. It’s resistant to rust, and tears and features brass fittings and an on/off valve. For someone who has a lot moving machinery or tools in their backyard, stainless steel is a great choice.

6. Melnor Flat: Best Soaker

Many plants dislike being sprayed, so watering your lawn requires a lot of spraying. Damp foliage can help promote and spread disease.

A deep watering of the roots is the best way to care for your plants. The Melnor Flat Soaker Garden Hose can be used as a great tool.

It’s a flat, flexible model that is easy to weave around plants and through planters, users say. It’s a very popular product among gardeners with straw bale gardens. This type of construction also makes it easy to fold and store.

A standard fitting length is 3/4 inches. You can choose from lengths of 25, 50, or 75 feet. The cap can be removed to allow multiple hoses to be connected.

The mulch you apply can cover your plant, but it will be less effective than a heavier covering.

Although it is more durable than a standard model, some people complain about leakage and degrading. However, the latter issue seemed to be more of a problem when the hose was left out continually, rather than rolling it up and storing it after each use.

The product can be made of PVC, ABS, or polyester. This product is covered by a limited two-year warranty.

Is Rubber Or Vinyl Better For Garden Hose?

Vinyl is not as tough on rubber hoses and it lasts longer than vinyl. Rubber is usually reinforced with nylon tire rope or polyester. Rubber hoses work well with both hot- and cold water. Rubber hoses have a higher resistance to kinks, cracking, and other problems than vinyl.

Is A 3/4 Garden Hose Better?

Regularly 3/4 inch hoses are reserved for professionals, like watering parks and gardens. Workers will be able to save time with the extra water flow in the 3/4-inch pipe when they have to prune or work on large areas. For basic maintenance, homes with a front and side yard are fine.

What Is The Best Garden Hose Size?

5/8″ is the standard and provides good water flow. The diameters of garden hoses are available in both 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch. A larger diameter hose holds more water. Light tasks, such as watering hanging baskets or small gardens, are easier with 1/2 to 3/4 inch diameter hoses.
