Read to your baby Age by Age

As your child grows, reading with them will be a different experience. From 0-3 Months, your newborn will experience rapid growth and adjustment to their environment. You can help them develop their eye sight by reading. Board books that are high in contrast such as white and red will stimulate the eyes and be appropriate for this stage. Spend time in an armchair and with your child during wake times reading 1-2 books each day. You can let your baby look at the images. 4-6 months: This stage will see your baby become more attentive and aware of all the details around them. You will notice a greater interaction in this stage than the newborn, and your baby will become more familiar with daily routines and activities. (This is one of my favorite stages!) Reading begins to take on a more important role in your baby’s day and they’ll love seeing vivid colors and bright pictures. Short board books could be introduced at this age with just 1-2 sentences per each page. You will find your little one captivated and exploring all the things around him. Use Indestructibles boards, sensory books and other durable books to entertain them. 9-9 Months: Your baby will become more mobile during this age and be more interested in sharing your books with you. You can introduce pictures books to teach colors and animals at this age. Baby’s love of looking at faces is what makes this the ideal age for picture books that feature pictures of baby. You may find that your baby is unable to remain still so it’s best to keep them entertained throughout the day. 10-12 Months: When your baby is closer to his/her first birthday, their interest in reading will grow. They might be a wiggle worm who loves to move around but you can still get in plenty of reading together because their attention span is growing. At this age, I love to get some books with longer words and alphabets. I love to read beyond my children’s level, so from 3 months old I would read the book to my child. Do you have any great recommendations for books that your baby would enjoy? While it was tough to select just 25, this is the list of my top 25 baby books.

These are the 15 best board books for babies, according to Booksellers

Photo: Courtesy the retailer. Emma Straub is an author and owns Books Are Magic, Brooklyn. She says it’s never too late to begin reading to your baby. Though parenting may seem difficult because you have to second-guess yourself often, Straub states that she believes reading to her children is the best thing for them. Straub is adamant that babies are listening and reading to books. “You can skip words up to the point where the child understands the entire text. Once that happens, the child will be able to call you. But until then, you can say literally any words that you want.” Everyone knows about classics like Margaret Wise Brown’s Goodnight Moon and Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar . However, these are only some of the many options available for baby books. So, to find the best and most unexpected baby board books (or smaller books with thicker pages meant to withstand grabby hands), we spoke to 11 experts, including Straub; Maggie Pouncey, co-owner of Stories Bookshop and Storytelling Lab ; Barry Coe, Strand’s children’s book buyer; Lynn Lobash, New York Public Library ‘s associate director of reader services; Vina Castillo, co-owner of Kew & Willow Books ; Lexi Beach, owner of Astoria Bookshop ; Caitlyn Morrissey, manager of Bank Street Bookstore ; Lauren Paris, manager of Book Culture on West 112th Street; Rebecca Fitting, head buyer and co-owner of Greenlight Bookstore ; Jordan Nielsen, children’s book buyer at Powerhouse Arena Powerhouse on 8th ; and Rachel Payne, coordinator of early childhood services at Brooklyn Public Library . Each book is recommended by at most two experts. However, we also included runners-up for each category to complete the list. Editor’s Note: We realized that we did not do a good job in linking readers to the recommended booksellers and updated our links accordingly.
