In Search Of The Perfect Pencil Point

Mary Norris Two things I spotted at the recent pencil party I attended made me drool: a Palomino long-point handheld pencil sharpener (I had not known that a handheld pencil sharpener could be anything but a toy; I have one in the shape of the Empire State Building that I treasure for sentimental reasons, but it is useless except as a cake decoration) and a state-of-the-art wall-mounted X-Acto sharpener that was featured in the Sharpening Lounge (it not only delivers a beautiful point but does so in reverent silence). Make that three things: available for browsing in the Sharpening Lounge were copies of the very satisfying pencil-yellow manual, just out from Melville House, in Brooklyn, “How to Sharpen Pencils,” by David Rees, one of very few books worthy of the dual category “Humor/Reference.” Until I went to the pencil party, I felt very alone, a crank among co-workers who were content to dip their pencil tips in any of the various electric pencil sharpeners on the premises. I hadn’t read David Rees until then. It was because I couldn’t see anything in the electric pencil sharpener.

David Rees specializes at the artisanal grinding of No. He will also sharpen #2 pencils for $15. Rees says, “If you are able to carve a tree with a chainsaw you will be able to sharpen a pencil using a pocketknife.” You can also use a manual pencil sharpener like the APSCO Chicago with Type 2A Cutter Assembly that my father installed in my basement in Cleveland in 1960.

David Rees could be retained to help me with my pencil-sharpening requirements, however I am afraid that I cannot afford his services. A quality soft-lead pencil, like the Blackwing or a No. 1) requires constant sharpening. By my calculations, to have my own artisanal pencil sharpener at the office fifteen dollars per pencil for a minimum of twenty-four sharpenings a day, five days a week would cost close to two thousand dollars a week.

The New Yorker used to have a system where you could throw away a dull pencil and pick up another one. Every morning, an office boy came to work with a stack of freshly-sharpened wooden peniels. And they were nice long ones, too no stubs. A tray of pencils was held by the boy, so you took out one quiver. You can almost hear it dreaming! Even then I think I knew that the office boy and his tray of pencils would go the way of the ivory-billed woodpecker.

The office boy became an electric pencil sharpener somewhere along the way. Mine was a Panasonic, and it gave a pretty good point, if you snatched the pencil out of its jaws in time. The pencil began to jam more frequently as I fed it with my No. 1 defective pencils. 1. pencils, which I should ship to Fort Dixon Ticonderoga). Perhaps the shattered leads were getting caught in the blades. I can’t see into them and even less could I clean them with a soft bristle toothbrush. Rees suggested it. I decided to try the next best option: unplug it, and then beat it against a desk edge. Rees would prefer a mallet. My next pencil sharpener will probably be the X Acto KS vacuum mounting. This is because my office furniture is not something you can use to drill holes without being noticed. I am content with looking at antique specimens that are online at The Early Office Museum, and the descendants of John J. Sharpener. Patent No. 875,129 in Love was received on November 23, 1899. 5,942,129 was November 23, 1899. This summer, I will definitely be visiting the Paul A. Johnson Pencil Sharpener Museum, at the Hocking Hills Regional Welcome Center, in Logan, Ohio. How could I have not known this until now? The wines of Portugal and Bordeaux are recommended by Rees as “Wines That Taste Like Pencils” in the appendix. I am also planning to taste the wine with graphite core and cedar shavings.
